Deer Park Toronto, formally known by Canadian First Nations People as “Mushquoteh” meaning a “meadow in the wood where deer come to feed”, was purchased by the Heath family in 1837. By the 1850’s, this growing neighbourhood was home to a general store, a cemetery, a school, a race track, and several country villas. On the corner of Yonge and St Clair, patrons of the newly built Deer Park Hotel would feed the wild deer that roamed the hotel grounds. In 1908, Deer Park Toronto was annexed to the City of Toronto and the neighbourhood saw a rapid growth of new residents. By the 1930’s Deer Park was a well-established community and to this date remains one of Toronto’s exclusive neighbourhoods.
The residential streets of the Deer Park Toronto neighbourhood lead straight onto Yonge Street or St. Clair Avenue, meaning that the homes in the community are not isolated like most upscale neighbourhoods. Deer Park has the perfect mix of exquisite semi-detached and detached houses that encompass both historical and modern architectural elements. Most of the homes in this area were built between 1875 and 1920. Deer Park Toronto also offers an excellent selection of newer luxury condominiums equipped with private balconies and picturesque views of the city, ravine, and park.
Unlike other upscale and exclusive neighbourhoods in Toronto, Deer Park is located right in the heart of an excellent shopping, entertainment, and business district. But this doesn’t mean that the area is all commercial. Residents of Deer Park Toronto thoroughly enjoy its vibrant green parkland, magnificent trees, and the Vale of Avoca Ravine. Situated around the Rosehill Reservoir is David Balfour Park. This green wooded park features a maintained path perfect for jogging, cycling, or walking and a large children’s playground perfect for families to enjoy. Just east of the park are access points to the Vale of Avoca Ravine which contains a scenic hiking trail along a winding creek. To the north is Oriole Park which contains another playground and two tennis courts. The neighbourhood is also connected to the historic Beltline trail. Opening in 1892, this trail was constructed as a commuter railway line to service many new neighbourhoods north of the city. Today, this 9 km trail is enjoyed by joggers, cycling enthusiasts and anyone looking to enjoy a leisurely walk.
