Humewood Toronto was built by William Hume Blake in the 1850’s and was named after his ancestral home in Ireland. Blake was a politician and prominent lawyer in the early years of Toronto. The 25 acre neighbourhood of Humewood Toronto was divided into a subdivision in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Humewood Park was part of William Hume Blake’s estate grounds and had a private driveway which is the present Humewood Drive. Unfortunately, the Estate on Blake’s grounds burned down in the late 1800’s and replaced by a similar house built on the historic foundation. In the early 1900’s, the Humewood home was purchased by the Anglican Diocese to serve as a refuge for young women in distress. The house has had numerous additions and renovations since then, but it still remains as a historical landmark and can be found at 40 Humewood Drive.
The homes of Humewood Toronto are situated along many tree-lined streets and cul de sacs. This quiet and tucked away neighbourhood also contains many one-way streets and very few through-ways which significantly minimize the traffic flow. Humewood Toronto has a well balance of historical and modern houses which are situated on quality lots. The houses were built between 1910 and 1925 and are reminiscent of Tudor, Edwardian, and English Cottage architecture. Large porches and expansive dormer windows are characteristic of most of the homes in the area.
Situated north of St. Clair Avenue West and West of Bathurst Street, residents of Humewood Avenue are conveniently located near an excellent variety of exquisite restaurants and shops. Residents can be found browsing the many fresh fruit and vegetable markets, along with discount stores, banks, and fast food. The largest concentration of Caribbean shops and restaurants in Toronto can also be found a walk away between Oakwood Avenue and Dufferin Street.
Humewood Toronto also has an excellent variety of recreational programs and activities for all ages offered at the Humewood Community School at 15 Cherrywood Avenue. Residents can enjoy many fitness programs, ballet classes (for preschoolers) as well as outdoor sports that can be played on the sports field and baseball diamonds. If outdoor sports is not your thing, Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute at 529 Vaughan Road has an indoor pool that is often used for Adult’s and children’s Aquatic classes. Like many areas of Toronto, Humewood is home to many green spaces such as Humewood Park. This park features wonderful gardens, large sun drenched lawns, paved walkways, and majestic maple trees.
