The first historic houses in Ledbury Park Toronto were built along Woburn and Bedford Park Avenues and up until the early 1900’s, this area was a small farming community. The successful publisher of the old Toronto Evening Journal, Alfred St. Germain was a hobby farmer who had land in the area. In 1922 the Melrose Realty Company subdivided the property under the name Melrose Park. The street names of the developing subdivision were named by the president of Melrose Realty, H.A. Clark. The street named Old Orchard Grove was selected because of the wonderful St. Germain apple orchard. Clark was an avid fan of Sir Walter Scott and named the streets of Ledbury Park Toronto after his work such as Deloraine, Melrose, Marmion, and Falkirk. Ledbury Park and Ledbury School were added to the subdivision in the 1950’s signifying the completion of the development.
There are a significant amount of new developments in the Ledbury Park Toronto neighbourhood, and these custom built new houses range in size from approximately two thousand to four thousand square feet. Custom finishing’s and lavish interiors are not uncommon in the area and the exteriors are generally made of solid brick, stucco, or stone. Many new houses have kept the old-world charm such as Juliet balconies, large bay windows, elaborate front porches decorated with Doric columns, and professional landscaping. Most of the original homes were built in the 1910’s to the 1950’s. These houses are reminiscent of Tudor style architecture and are mostly bungalows, two-storey detached and semi-detached homes with premium thirty to fifty foot wide lots.
Residents of Ledbury Park are in walking distance of one of Toronto’s most popular shopping districts. Avenue Road offers a generous mix of shopping such as boutique fashion stores, furniture and interior design shops, gourmet food shops, sporting goods store, and a discount supermarket. For a different shopping experience, Bathurst street shopping offers all types of unique bookstores, gift shops, kosher food shops, restaurants, delicatessens, and bakeries that sell Montreal style bagels.
Right in the centre of the neighbourhood is Ledbury Park. The park recently has been redesigned and earned the Canadian Architect Award of Excellence for its innovative approach to urban park planning. The centre piece to this newly renovated park is the skating rink and reflecting pool that is liked to a beautify swimming pool. The park is also children friendly with a specifically designed children’s water play area and playground.
