Rathnelly Toronto was named after the famous former Rathnelly house, built in 1830 by Senator William McMaster. This house, and later on, the entire area, was named after McMaster’s former home in Rathnelly, Ireland. The house remained under the McMaster name throughout the 1880’s until it was sold to developers who thereafter began working on what is now the present neighbourhood.
At the heart of this neighbourhood is the Brown Community Centre and school, located on Avenue Road. This centre includes an indoor pool and gym, as well as sporting options like basketball and tennis. Near the centre is also what is known as the Nordheimer Ravine Nature Trail, off Boulton Drive. The trail features the natural beauty of Rathnelly, as well as provides entertainment for kids through the wading pool and children’s playground. As far as shopping goes, unique and local stores are within walking distance for Rathnelly residents. In this neighbourhood, you’ll find the popular Bloor-Yorkville shopping area with its international retailers and food.
Homes in Rathnelly Toronto include Victorian semi-detached and detached homes built from 1880 to 1910. As one of the smallest neighbourhoods in Toronto, home sales are rather limited within Rathnelly, encouraging buyers to move quickly if they want a home in the area. Not only are buyers typically attracted to the area’s centers and schools, but also the friendly and close-knit atmosphere within the community.
This neighbourhood is extremely desirable due to its easy commute to schools such as U of T, shopping at Yonge and Bloor, and other key areas downtown.
