D.F. Crowagen and George Kappele of Toronto Suburbs Ltd. registered a plan of a new subdivision that would be developed on the old Waverley farm at Lawrence Avenue and Mount Pleasant Road. This new subdivision would be known as Waverley Park. Like many neighbourhoods in Toronto, the First World War and The Great Depression postponed the development of houses in the area. In 1931, the creation of the Wanless public park resulted in many homes to be expropriated in the centre of the neighbourhood. Eventually, the surrounding area adopted this name. Many of the streets in the community are named after Toronto’s former alderman and educator, John Wanless.
Wanless Park Toronto saw most of its development in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Most of the houses in the Toronto neighbourhood are two storey detached homes made from solid brick. However there are a few solid brick bungalows in the community as well. These sturdy houses are situated on premium large lots that are at least thirty feet wide with private or mutual driveways. There is a lot of green space in Wanless Park, and most of the homes either face the park or back onto the Ravine.
Wanless Park Toronto is located right by the family-centric upscale shopping area of Yonge and Lawrence Village. This vibrant shopping district includes professional offices, exquisite restaurants, gourmet food shops, and one-of-a-kind stores and boutiques. There are also two major sporting goods stores in the area where many people from around the GTA come to shop. If you would like to make your way to another district of Toronto to shop, Wanless Park is conveniently located right by the Lawrence subway station on Yonge Street. The neighbourhood is also only 20 minutes for the downtown core.
Wanless Park contains one of the most impressive parks for recreation in Toronto. Its facilities include a basketball court, a baseball diamond, a children’s playground and five floodlit tennis courts. If you’re looking for something indoors during the colder months, Bedford Park Community Centre located on Ranleigh Avenue has a large indoor pool and a gymnasium. There are also a variety of programs for Adults, children, and preschoolers at the George Locke Library located at Yonge and Lawrence.
