The name York Mills is derived from “York” referring to the forerunner to Toronto, the old Town of York, and “Mills” referring to the saw and grist mills that filled the area from 1804 to 1926. Many years ago, York Mills saw its fair share of quality industry. The community had a blacksmith, a tannery, a distillery, a school, a post office, a toll gate, and three churches. York Mills has many historical landmarks, but the centre piece of this vibrant community is the St. John’s Anglican Church. Originally a log cabin style church, it was replaced with a solid white brick construction in 1844 and every day at noon, the church bells ring over the valley below. York Mills began to transform into a residential community in 1930 mostly around the Hedgewood Road area and near St John’s church on the hill.
York Mills Toronto is known for its historical ambiance with its old majestic trees, lush green landscapes, and premium lots. Most of the houses built in the area are reminiscent of English Cottage and Tudor architecture and built between the late 1920’s to the 1960’s. The neighbourhood is made up of split-level homes and bungalows that incorporate a good mix of old world and contemporary styling. . If you prefer the apartment-style living, York Mills offers many low-rise and high-rise condominiums and apartments for all budget ranges.
York Mills Toronto is located right in the heart of many plazas and street side shops. Conveniently to the south-west is the York Mills Plaza. In this outdoor plaza, you will find a Shopper’s Drug Mart, a wine shop, an international restaurant, and small boutique style retailers. In the north-east of York Mills, you will find the Bayview Village Shopping Centre. In this vibrant shopping centre you will find an exquisite selection of fine restaurants, jewellery stores, a book shop, and several designer clothing boutiques.
