A prominent brewer named Joseph Bloor and Sheriff William Botsford Jarvis subdivided the neighbourhood in 1830. Named after the town of York, Yorkville was declared a village in 1853. Situated on the tower of the historic Yorkville Fire Hall is the neighbourhood’s first council member’s trades and initials. This historic fire hall is located at 34 Yorkville Avenue. After being annexed by the City of Toronto in 1883, the residents of this quaint neighbourhood will tell you that it has always maintained its individuality. In the 1980’s and 1990’s it became the most well-known shopping meccas in Toronto.
Yorkville Toronto has many historical homes that have been gentrified over the years. These houses exhibit many distinct characteristics such as cast iron fences, gingerbread gables, ornamental brick patterns, and vibrant landscaping and gardens. Located at 115 Cumberland Street, the Village of Yorkville Park has won many awards pertaining to its thematic landscape based on the distinct Canadian Landscape, and the elements of Yorkville’s own history. If you’re looking for some exercise, head north to Ramsden Park where you will find a picturesque children’s playground, an artificial ice rink, a baseball diamond, and four wonderful tennis courts. Within walking distance of Yorkville, you can find the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. And the McLaughlin Planetarium.
